01A methods assignment is won at the operational definition
Ask a psychology student what broke their methods paper and the answer is usually the statistics. Read the marked script and the damage started earlier, at a construct that was never turned into anything measurable. Stress, engagement, resilience and wellbeing are perfectly good ideas, and none of them becomes a variable until you say what gets recorded, with what instrument, at what interval, in what units.
Everything downstream inherits that decision. A vague definition leaves the design controlling for nothing in particular, the analysis testing nothing specific, and the discussion hedging. So the definition is settled and approved first, the design is then chosen to answer the question it created, and the alternative explanations a reader would raise are handled before a marker has to raise them.

Almost every program in this field carries a quantitative requirement, and it is where a disproportionate number of students stall out.
