This is why persistence alone does not produce a site. A student sending forty emails is working one link of four, and the other three are invisible from where they stand. Meanwhile the program deadline moves closer at a rate unaffected by how many messages were sent, and the term that was supposed to hold the rotation quietly stops being available.

02The agreement decides your start date
A willing preceptor does not let you begin. The contract between your school and the site does, and it moves at the speed of whichever office is slowest to read it. Students routinely find a supervisor in week two and start hours in week nine, having spent seven weeks waiting on a document nobody told them existed.
So the agreement is opened early and pushed rather than posted. Where a site has never worked with your school, that gap is identified at the start, when there is still time for a different site, instead of six weeks in when there is not. Where your school has an approved list, it is checked first, because an existing agreement removes the longest wait in the process.
03Redundancy, because people change jobs
Preceptors move employers, go on leave, lose capacity when a colleague resigns, and none of that adjusts your program's dates. A rotation cancelled two weeks out is a common event, not a rare one, and it is the single most expensive thing that can happen to a graduate timeline.
A second site is therefore identified while the first is being confirmed, and kept warm. Hours already worked are documented as they happen, so nothing completed is at risk when a site changes. That record is also what your school will ask for at the end, and reconstructing it months later from memory is how students lose hours they genuinely worked. Coursework can run beside all of it under full class help or on its own under weekly coursework ops.

How long before I have a confirmed site?
Nobody honest gives one number, because the answer depends on your specialty, your state and how many sites near you already hold an agreement with your school. What you get instead is a weekly position report: which link is moving, which one is stuck, and whether the term you are targeting is still realistic. If it is not, you hear that early.
Which specialties and states can you cover?
All fifty states, with the practical caveat that density varies enormously. Family practice in a metropolitan area behaves nothing like psychiatric-mental health in a rural county, and we say which situation yours resembles before you commit. Where a specialty in your area is genuinely thin, the honest options are widening the radius or moving the rotation a term, and both get put to you.
Do you handle my school's paperwork as well?
Yes, and it is normally the part worth handing over. Affiliation agreements, preceptor credential forms, background and health documentation, hour logs and the evaluations that close a rotation. Those documents are read against your program's own requirements first, since a form submitted in the wrong version comes straight back and costs a fortnight nobody has.
My preceptor just pulled out. What happens now?
The reserve site is activated, which is the reason one is held from the beginning. Hours you already completed are documented and preserved rather than reconstructed later. Then the same four links are worked again for the new site, with the credential package already assembled, so the second search is materially faster than the first was.
Can I take placement without buying anything else?
Yes. This objective is quoted on its own, and plenty of students take only this while keeping every course themselves. That split is often the right one, because the search and the paperwork consume evenings without teaching you anything about your field, whereas the coursework at least belongs to the qualification you are earning.
